Chapter 1 Part 3

EXAMPLE 2 - First Impression Charts

First Impression is the name of a charting program created by Visual Tools. It is included with WINKS to give you some additional graphing options beyond the analytic options associated with WINKS analyses. Since it is a separate program, it contains some differences in the way charts are displayed and manipulated. Follow these steps to display an example First Impression Chart.

Step 1: Open the database named BARCHART by clicking on the "File Cabinet" Icon, then choosing the BARCHART.DBF filename. A message at the bottom of the screen will tell you that the database is opened.

Step 2: Click on the "Chart" Gallery Icon or select "Graph/First Impression Charts" from the Analyze menu. A dialog box appears displaying several chart types. Click on the "Bar Chart" icon in the Chart Gallery.

Step 3: Select the variable field to chart - (click on VAR1 in the field box on the left, then click on ADD.) This places the VAR1 fieldname in the "Data field(s)" box to the right of the ADD button. You can choose as many as 10 fields. For this example, select only the field named VAR1. If you accidentally choose a wrong field, you can remove a field from the selected box by clicking on the field name in the Data field(s) box, and then click Remove.

Click on LABEL in the Field box, then click on the Label button. This selects what field will be used as the label field in the graph.

Once you have selected the VAR1 field, and the LABEL field for the label, click OK.

STEP 4: A bar chart, as shown in figure 1.6, appears.

You can change the type of graph and a number of other options by clicking on the right mouse button to display the First Impression options menu.

Note:

There are two graph types in WINKS. The graph in the first example had a number of options in a button bar on the Graphics Viewer screen. We'll refer to this type of graph as an "Analysis Graph" This second graph has only one button bar option, Exit. This graph is actually being displayed by a separate program called First Impression. We'll call these "First Impression Charts." Since First Impression is really a separate program it contains its own menu structure, which is a pop-up menu, as described below.

Step 5: While pointing at the plot, click the Right Mouse Button to display the pop-up graph options menu, then select the Plot... menu item.

From this menu, you can select a number of options. This menu allows you to choose options on how your graph will be displayed.

For this example, click on the 3D "radio button" option in the "Chart" option box at the left of the dialog box, then choose Ok.

A 3D version of the bar chart will appear as shown in figure 7.

PRINTING A First Impression Chart:

Choose the Print option from the Pop-Up Menu (right mouse button). From the Print menu, you can choose the "Page Setup" option to select how the chart will be printed. Thus, even if the chart is small on the screen, you can usually make it larger on the printed page using these options.

Hint

You can usually make the chart larger on the screen by adjusting the chart keys and titles. Click and drag the key or title (i.e., the VAR1 key in figure 7), or double click on it and edit it.

Step 5: Press the right mouse button again and select Plot.... This time, choose a LINE (Tape) Chart type from the Series Type option box, then choose OK. A Tape/Line graph appears. Experiment with the other graph types to see the variety of ways you can choose to display a First Impression Graph.

Notice the folder tabs at the option of the menu. When you click on one of these tabs, a different menu with charting options appears.
